One of my favorite late morning activities is to drive along South Ocean Boulevard with my babe snoozing in the backseat, humming along to the “musical theatre for babies” playlist, while nursing a @celisjuicebar smoothie in the cupholder. So often, inspiration strikes while sandwiched in the passageway between ocean and creeping vines.

Hello, friends! 👋🏾 I’m Dorothy Gal-Hahn, a watercolor artist based in sunny Palm Beach, Florida, where tropical colors weave their way into everything I paint. My work draws from the coast’s wild beauty, my Polish heritage, and the many melodies I carry with me from my travels as an opera singer.

Watercolor is my medium of choice, though I occasionally wander into acrylics and oil sticks when inspiration calls. Last year, my husband and I welcomed our sweet son, filling life (and my art) with new light and tenderness. ✨

I grew up in a family of Polish immigrants where art and craft were a way of life. From my grandmother’s embroidered goralski vests to my grandfather’s steady hands as a builder, they taught me that creativity is a language spoken through both heart and hands.

Here’s to living boldly, creating freely, and sharing this artistic journey together. I’m always open to collaborations and creative connection - let’s dream up something beautiful.

This year’s gala will be held in Boston, welcoming 700 guests in the ballroom and hundreds more bidding remotely. “Art For A Cure” is the evening’s highest-grossing category, with an inspiring goal of $2.65 million in support of life-changing research.

Five fun facts about the human behind the art 🎨

1️⃣ I grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, then bounced my way through NYC and Houston before landing in Palm Beach.

2️⃣ My husband and I met studying opera at Rice University. Years later we realized our NYC opera coaches (whose apartments we were frequently visiting) lived in the same building, on the same floor, as neighbors. I like to think we once held the door open for each other, blissfully unaware we’d soon be more than strangers in the stairwell. Concentric circles, indeed.

3️⃣ I could never tire of smoothies. No time for breakfast? Smoothie. No ice cream in the freezer? Smoothie. Need a pick-me-up? You guessed it — it’s smoothie time.

4️⃣ The only watercolor paper I use is @archespapers. Some of the best advice I ever received was to always use the good paper, because there’s nothing worse than finally creating a masterpiece only to realize it’s not on fine paper. Since I’m still waiting on that masterpiece to arrive, I’ll just keep painting on Arches. 😉

5️⃣ My caffeine of choice is a matcha tea oat milk latte. I never picked up a coffee habit, but there’s no way I could survive these all-nighter, baby-raising days without it!

Inspired by time spent in Maggie Valley — where Joey’s Pancake House anchors the roadside and Ghost Town’s remains sit above the valley. It’s where elk wander into the yard like neighbors, birds chatter from dawn to dusk, and my grandma’s spring garden fills with glittering butterflies as Jonathan’s Creek roars its steady, soothing white noise.

The white walls gave a sense of calm and order, but I wanted touches of color and creativity too. By the rocking chair, where our quiet afternoon naps would happen, I decided to paint something peaceful.

I began with an ocean-blue underpainting and, almost magically, a swan appeared. 🦢✨ I followed its shape, layering soft grays and blush pinks around it. Now, this gentle little painting calms one of my favorite corners in his room. A serene pause amidst all the joyful color.

Hello, friends! 👋🏾 I’m Dorothy Gal-Hahn — an artist based in sunny Palm Beach, Florida, where ocean light and tropical color weave their way into everything I paint. My work draws from the coast’s wild beauty, my Polish heritage, and the many melodies I carry with me from my travels as an opera singer.

Watercolor is my medium of choice, though I often wander into acrylics and oil sticks when inspiration calls. This year, my husband and I welcomed our first child, filling life (and my art) with new light and tenderness. ✨

⏰ One of my favorite places to paint is near the Worth Avenue Clock Tower in Palm Beach, Florida, spread out on an oversized beach blanket with my two best guys.

Often I like to sketch my designs outdoors, putting down rough shapes and taking plenty of reference photos for later.

Then, it’s back to the home studio for detail work! 🎨

One of my favorite “perks” of creating an abstract floral painting with checkerboard background is that there is no “right way” to hang it - lending itself to more versatility in your space. Often, I rotate the orientation of my pieces while actively painting as I find a change of perspective allows me to accentuate hidden treasures found within.

Many times a piece feels equally at ease in one or two (sometimes even three!) different positions. I love when a collector sends me a photo of my art in their space and its orientation catches me by surprise. 🫶🏻

Being an opera singer, assuming there will be a constant soundtrack running circles in your mind throughout the day is a safe bet. Early morning, I stepped onto the wet sand with sand granules peeking out between my toes, and I couldn’t help but think of the lyrics to Andre Previn’s “I Can Smell The Sea Air” from A Streetcar Named Desire. Do you ever listen to music while you paint?

I can smell the sea air. Ah, the sea!
The blessedest thing that God created in the seven days.
The rest of my days I’m going to spend on the sea.
And when I die, I’m going to die there on the sea.

One day out on the ocean, I will die.
I will die – with my hand in the hand of some good-looking nice ship’s doctor, with a small blond mustache.
And he’ll have a silver watch and he’ll look at me.
And he’ll look at his silver watch and sadly say: “Poor lady!”

I’ll be buried at sea, dropped overboard.
Sewn up in a clean white shroud.
At the stroke of noon, iin the blaze of the summer, into an ocean as blue as my first love’s eyes!

I painted this one summer in Santa Barbara, California. My husband and I were renting a house overlooking the Old Mission Rose Garden. Since we shared a car, I would walk down the mountainside through the garden to get into town most mornings to attend Carissa Luminess’ fabulous watercolor classes, work in SBCC’s ceramic studio, or run errands.

I never imagined selling my artwork until the day I put the finishing touches on this painting. I carried it outside, down the mountain to photograph in the rose garden, but before I could snap a picture, an interior designer throwing tennis balls to her spirited golden lab stopped me. She asked if I sold large prints, as she could already picture the piece hanging in her client’s home.

Our serendipitous meeting left me properly blushed and caught off guard. Pinker than the roses, I trekked back up to our rental and looked at the collection of pieces I painted that summer in a new light.
