I’m Dorothy Gal-Hahn, a watercolor artist based in Palm Beach, Florida. Since the birth of our son, I’ve found myself completely immersed in the world of babies. This collection grew from a desire to celebrate our little Harry through joyful paintings that capture childhood magic.

From playful monkeys, flamingos, and alligators we regularly spot at the Palm Beach Zoo to whimsical glittering hearts and florals, each piece is filled with color and imagination.

At the heart of the collection is The Quilted Kind of Love series. Each painting is inspired by the feeling of a handmade quilt. Imperfectly perfect, with organic shapes and gentle irregularities that speak more to lived experience than precise craftsmanship. Rather than crisp symmetry, I was drawn to the beauty of patchwork: clear evidence of a hand at work, a life in motion, and moments lovingly stitched together.

As I navigate my son’s early years, I often wish I could preserve every detail, every milestone, every ordinary afternoon. Yet the days move quickly, and instead of carefully archiving each moment, we’re usually busy living it.

People always ask what size I like to paint most… and honestly, I love them all.

Swipe to see the tiny 8x8 that sparked this rather toothy alligator. 🐊 I started by testing out a floral motif, and somewhere along the way, tangled a gator amidst the vines.

There’s something I love about both ends of the spectrum. The intimacy of a small piece and the daunting freedom of a large one. I never quite know what’s going to emerge… but that unpredictability is half the magic. ✨

One of my favorite late morning activities is to drive along South Ocean Boulevard with my babe snoozing in the backseat, humming along to the “musical theatre for babies” playlist, while nursing a @celisjuicebar smoothie in the cupholder. So often, inspiration strikes while sandwiched in the passageway between ocean and creeping vines.

Watercolor is my medium of choice, though I occasionally wander into acrylics and oil sticks when inspiration calls. Last year, my husband and I welcomed our sweet son, filling life (and my art) with new light and tenderness. ✨

I grew up in a family of Polish immigrants where art and craft were a way of life. From my grandmother’s embroidered goralski vests to my grandfather’s steady hands as a builder, they taught me that creativity is a language spoken through both heart and hands.

I’m deeply honored to have been invited by the New England Chapter of Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to showcase my work at their 44th Annual Gala.

This year’s gala will be held in Boston, welcoming 700 guests in the ballroom and hundreds more bidding remotely. “Art For A Cure” is the evening’s highest-grossing category, with an inspiring goal of $2.65 million in support of life-changing research.

Five fun facts about the human behind the art 🎨

1️⃣ I grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, then bounced my way through NYC and Houston before landing in Palm Beach.

2️⃣ My husband and I met studying opera at Rice University. Years later we realized our NYC opera coaches (whose apartments we were frequently visiting) lived in the same building, on the same floor, as neighbors. I like to think we once held the door open for each other, blissfully unaware we’d soon be more than strangers in the stairwell. Concentric circles, indeed.

3️⃣ I could never tire of smoothies. No time for breakfast? Smoothie. No ice cream in the freezer? Smoothie. Need a pick-me-up? You guessed it — it’s smoothie time.

4️⃣ The only watercolor paper I use is @archespapers. Some of the best advice I ever received was to always use the good paper, because there’s nothing worse than finally creating a masterpiece only to realize it’s not on fine paper. Since I’m still waiting on that masterpiece to arrive, I’ll just keep painting on Arches. 😉

5️⃣ My caffeine of choice is a matcha tea oat milk latte. I never picked up a coffee habit, but there’s no way I could survive these all-nighter, baby-raising days without it!

My watercolor style is a balancing act between intention and spontaneity. The same way I rely on calendars, brainstorming lists, and discipline to manage concurrent careers in the fields of music and art, a painting’s structure anchors the foundation so freedom can flow through.

Sometimes I pick up a paint brush with a clear idea of the foliage I want to create and out pops an alligator. 🐊 Other times, a color palette or abstract blob leads the way to clarity. I don’t always know what the end product will look like, but I can tell you this - nothing honest ever springs from watercolor shackles!

Sometimes I pick up a paint brush with a clear idea of the foliage I want to create and out pops an alligator. 🐊 Other times, a color palette or abstract blob leads the way to clarity. I don’t always know what the end product will look like, but I can tell you this - nothing honest ever springs from watercolor shackles!

When I was little, I used to draw mannequins in the margins of my textbooks and design dresses on them during class in pencil. Now, this was pre-mechanical pencil era, so finger callouses were aplenty and a visual reminder of less interesting lessons of days past.

Puffy sleeves, empire waists, checkerboard prints, funky embellishments, and usually a big rose right at the center. Same elements - different decade. 😀
