The Silver Swan 🦢

The first song my late voice teacher in college assigned me was “The Silver Swan” by Ned Rorem. The melody felt like the most beautiful pearl, tucked away until the moment it was meant to be found.

“The silver swan, who living had no note,
When death approached, unlocked her silent throat;
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more:
“Farewell, all joys; Oh death, come close mine eyes;
More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.”

Thank you to Ashley Davis and the Shoutout Colorado team for taking the time to sit down and speak with me about navigating life as an opera singer (with a crafty side)! To me, an artist’s journey often feels akin to riding a roller coaster - but only being tucked in with a lap bar. It’s this zig-zagging which is addictive and exciting, as long as you set your sights ahead and take care not to get dizzy.
