Watercolor art is a captivating medium that can turn simple brush strokes into vivid expressions. Whether you are just starting your artistic journey or have years of experience, quality supplies can make all the difference. If you're ready to enhance your skills, here are my five favorite products available on Amazon that can help you unlock your watercolor potential!

*For full transparency, please note that since I am part of the Amazon Associate program, I receive a very tiny commission from any sales made through my affiliate links posted below. Although just pennies on the dollar, I hope that it may one day help to sustain my small business. I love being able to share products I fully endorse and use on a daily basis as a watercolor artist, and hope that they help you in your artistic journeys!

Arches Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper

Every artist understands that the right paper is crucial for successful watercolor painting. Arches cold pressed watercolor paper is my top choice due to its superior texture and absorbency. This 100% cotton paper allows paint to flow seamlessly, creating vibrant washes and deeper colors. Its durability means it can handle techniques like lifting and scrubbing without tearing, and is archival quality. I personally prefer painting on blocks, which are glued on three sides, so that your work dries flat. You can simply use a butter knife to loosen each piece when finished (and don't to forget to remove the black protective sheet on top)! If you can only splurge on one thing, I highly recommend it being your paper. Be sure to double check that you're ordering the correct size before purchasing.

Daniel Smith Professional Paints

In the world of watercolor, the pigment quality can greatly impact your results. Daniel Smith professional paints stand out for their exceptional color range, featuring over 250 vibrant options. These paints are crafted from the finest pigments, ensuring excellent lightfastness—meaning your art will retain its brilliance over time. Opera Pink, Cadmium Red, and Lemon Yellow are three hues I always have on my palette. And because they are professional grade, a little goes a long way!

CSY Art Gallery Metallic Watercolor Paint Set

Bring a distinctive flair to your artwork with the CSY Art Gallery metallic watercolor paint set. This collection features 6 shimmering colors that elevate your pieces to a new level. Ideal for accents in landscapes or highlights in floral paintings, metallic watercolors can create mesmerizing effects. I searched high and low for the most striking metallic gold watercolors and love the buildability of these paints. The differences in color seem minimal, yet show brilliantly on paper.

Windsor and Newton Art Masking Fluid

Masking fluid is an essential tool for watercolor artists who want to keep white spaces pristine. Windsor and Newton art masking fluid stands out for its easy application and clean removal. It allows you to cover areas that you wish to keep untouched by ink or paint. This fluid is useful for adding fine details, especially in complex backgrounds or when creating intricate designs. With masking fluid, you can achieve sharp edges and dramatic contrasts, making your artwork more professional. I'd suggest adding it to an empty fine tip squeeze bottle for better control.

Palette with Large Mixing Areas and Ample Wells

A well-designed palette can enhance your painting experience significantly. I personally prefer a palette (only $6.99 on Amazon right now!) that offers a combination of large mixing areas and sufficient smaller wells for your colors. This setup allows for better blending and easier experimentation with different shades. For instance, a palette with at least 12 wells for colors can keep your workspace organized and prevent unintended color mixing. A spacious layout will help maintain a clutter-free environment, making your creative process smoother and more enjoyable.
